Hiv-situationen i Sverige t.o.m. oktober 2007
Totalt har 7 850 hiv-fall rapporterats i Sverige 1985-oktober 2007 (fig 1), varav 2 140 har fått aids-diagnos.
Figur 1. Antal hiv-anmälda i Sverige 1988-okt 2007
Figur 2. Smittade i Sverige respektive utomlands, anmälda jan-okt 2002-2007
Den inhemska spridningen har ökat de senaste åren och ses framför allt bland intravenösa missbrukare i Stockholmsområdet och bland män som har sex med män (fig 3).
Figur 3. Smittade i Sverige, smittväg, anmälda jan-okt 2002-2007

THE METCHNIKOFF'S LEGACY IN 2008 - April 28-30, 2008
In 1908, twenty years after having joined the newly created Institut Pasteur, Elie Metchnikoff shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology & Medicine with Paul Ehrlich. This prize was awarded to Metchnikoff for his discovery of phagocytes as the basis of cell-mediated immunity and to Ehrich for his studies on antibodies and humoral immunity. Metchnikoff viewed phagocytosis within the wider concept of "Harmony and Disharmony" that described the complex relationship between pathogens and their hosts. One hundred years later, the importance of Metchnikoff's legacy is increasingly evident. Metchnikoff proposed that phagocytosis was an ancient mechanism originating in primitive metazoans that provided a rapidly operating defense system against microorganisms. Today, we know that phagocytes also play a crucial role in adaptive immunity in higher organisms, thus reconciling Metchnikoff's cellular immunity with Paul Ehrlich's humoral immunity.
25 YEARS OF HIV - May 19-21, 2008
HIV was isolated 25 years ago. HIV research then and now bear no comparison. While the meeting will understandably take us back to 1983, it seeks to present cutting edge research from the virus to the clinic. It kicks off with structural studies on the virus and moves on to how the host cell tries to restrict replication by a variety of different approaches. The day ends with an overview of the enormous diversity of simian look-alike virus. The second day is resolutely immunological and covers antibodies, T cell responses and immunopathogenesis. The ensemble is tied up by reviewing the impact of human polymorphisms on disease progression. The last day turns to the difficult problems of a vaccine and drug resistance. The changing face of clinical AIDS and the disease burden in the Africa and Asia bring up the rear.
UNDERSTANDING AND CONTROLLING INFECTIOUS DISEASES: AN AGENDA FOR THE XXI:st CENTURY - November 11-13, 2008
The 120th anniversary of the foundation of the Institut Pasteur will take place in 2008. One of the events to highlight this celebration will be the 7th Louis Pasteur Conference on Infectious Diseases. This two-day conference will gather the world's best experts in the fields of epidemiology, public health, microbiology, and immunology. The major goals of the Conference will be to present cutting-edge concepts and methodologies and discuss how they might increase our ability to monitor emerging infectious diseases, model and control epidemics, understand pathogenesis at the molecular and cellular levels, discover new drugs, dissect the host immunity, and generate new vaccines. The Conference will consist of four sessions, each opening with a historical perspective presenting past achievements and how basic research has been able to eliminate critical 'roadblocks', and closing with a talk stressing the remaining challenges in controlling infectious diseases.

Nordic Summer School in Methods of Infectious Disease Epidemiology
(NordForsk course)
When: 27 June–4 July 2008
Where: Skjoldenaesholm’s Castle on Sjaelland, Denmark.
Who: Nordic and Baltic phD students, research-minded infectious disease doctors and microbiologists, as well as others with an interest in the epidemiology of infections.
What: The course will emphasise new aspects of the spread of infectious diseases in developed countries and their long-term consequences. Particular focus will be put on more advanced methods and ways to study causation and risk factor associations. We will address issues related to the study of longitudinal data, counting processes and transmission dynamic modelling.
Course language: English.
Course organisers: Prof. Mads Melbye, Division of Epidemiology, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, and Prof. Johan Giesecke, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Stockholm, Sweden.
Faculty: Researchers from the Lon-don School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK; the Centers for Disease Control, USA, National Institutes of Health, USA, and Nordic infectious disease epidemiologists.
Course secretary: Annemette Kristensen.
Course fee: The tuition is DKK 3,000 (none for Baltic or Russian participants). Travel expenses (at lowest standard cost) are reimbursed.
Application: On line registration: www.epiresearch.dk
Alternatively, you may e-mail your application to Annemette Kristensen, Division of Epidemiology, Statens Serum Institut, e-mail: abk@ssi.dk. Telephone: +45 32 68 31 64, www.epiresearch.dk. Reasons for applying should be stated, and the application include a short CV (2 pages), description of current research project (1 page), plus an indication of overall research interests (1 page)
