Centre for Microbiological Preparedness

The rapidly changing spectrum of new infectious diseases threats requires actions by SMI.

Bioterrorism risks, as well as natural epidemics and outbreaks of infectious diseases, are growing problems, mainly internationally, but also within Sweden. Events like Ebola in Gabon and Congo, foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain, smallpox vaccinations in the USA and SARS are recent reminders.

In order to increase our prepared-ness against these threats, a Centre for Microbiological Preparedness (KCB) has been established at SMI. Knowledge and diagnostic capacity regarding the microorganisms that may be used in war and terrorism or that cause rare infections which could be a threat to Sweden, have been established at KCB and is used to develop our ability to manage the diseases if they appear.
